If you know me, you know I love gin – especially high-quality gin with unique botanicals (check out Sheringham’s Seaside Gin, Legend Distilling’s Doctor’s Orders, (that lavender!), and all the things by Dillon’s (go for the unfiltered gin if you are looking for a place to start).
Okay – here is where I get a bit snobby (or maybe I already did – ha) – but why bother having an amazing gin if you are going to pair it with lacklustre tonic water? Before trying Betty Buzz – Blake Lively’s non-alcoholic mixer company – my go to was Fever Tree. While I will absolutely never hesitate to go for Fever Tree again, if given the option between the two I would choose Betty Buzz – mostly because it’s not as sweet but it doesn’t have that fake sugar taste like Stevia does (gross). Even though one bottle is only 50 calories, the flavour is incredible – tasty enough to be enjoyed on its own without any gin even.
I have also tried the Meyer Lemon and the Grapefruit. Grapefruit has become my go-to these days. You can tell it’s made with fresh grapefruit juice, but like the tonic water – it’s not overly sweet. I usually enjoy it on its own, but will sometimes add some tequila to make it like an easy Paloma.
Unlike the other two beverages, the Meyer Lemon has no added sweetener. It was also very good and it had the distinct Meyer lemon flavour with a hint of natural sweetness, which I much prefer to regular sparkling lemon beverages.
There are two more flavours – ginger beer and lemon lime. I haven’t picked them up yet, but will definitely be trying them soon.
As far as I know, you can’t yet get Betty Buzz in Canada; however, you can order online ($29.99 for 12 bottles). If you are in Iowa, they are available in the Hy-Vee liquor store for $5.99 for 4 bottles (when I last checked), but I have seen them on sale for $3.99.
